Ben inspires brigade's cancer charity drive
A boys' brigade group has organised a car boot sale for a cancer charity as one of its members continues his treatment for leukaemia.
Ben Smith, nine, was diagnosed two years ago and still has to have chemotherapy at his home in Kettering every day, as well as travelling to Leicester Royal Infirmary for treatment.
Eight months ago he joined the 3rd Kettering Boys' Brigade and the company, which holds regular car boot sales, decided to use one of its events to raise money for the charity Children with Leukaemia.
Company captain Val Gilbert said: "Ben has been a tower of strength through his illness, he's been absolutely brilliant.
"He really copes and tries to join in with everything.
"We do a car boot sale every month from April to September – four for the boys' brigade and two for charity.
"We thought that with having Ben with us, it would be nice to do something for all children with leukaemia.
"The last one we did for the Crazy Hats breast cancer appeal raised 500 so we're hoping for at least 300.
"This one will be extra special.
"There are so many youngsters nowadays being diagnosed with cancer and leukaemia."
The sale will take place tomorrow at the Meadow Road recreation ground in Kettering starting at 7am.
Pitches are 5.
The boys in the group have been busy promoting the car boot sale at their schools.
Ben, who lives on the Ise Lodge estate, attends Millbrook Junior School.
Ben's dad Jason said his son was now in remission and that he will continue to have chemotherapy for about another year.
He said: "It's great that the boys' brigade chose to raise money for Children with Leukaemia because these charities need all the help they can get."
