Bank raided by men with sledgehammers

Two men wearing balaclavas and wielding sledgehammers staged a daring daylight bank robbery in Kettering this evening.

The two men smashed the door of the Abbey, in Kettering's High Street, as a security van was parked outside.

They then sped away from the scene in a getaway car, leaving a security guard groaning in pain on the floor.

Police said two people were taken to hospital. It is not known how badly they were injured or if the robbers got away with any money.

Det Insp Andy Nichols, of Northamptonshire Police, said the raid happened at 6.45pm.

Police believe three men were involved in the robbery, including the getaway car driver.

The vehicle was later discovered dumped in a housing estate. It is believed the robbers used another car to escape.

One eyewitness, who did not want to be named, said they saw the cashier looking shaken and the security guard on the floor.

Another witness, Daniel Sims, of Kettering, who took the picture on our website, said: "I was incredibly shocked to find it happening in Kettering – I expect that in London, but not in Kettering because it's a small town."
