Baftas vs the box office
The British Academy Film and Television Arts Film Awards ceremony takes place tomorrow, honouring the stars of the silver screen. Features editor Joni Ager takes a look at the nominees and finds out how they compare with the local blockbusters of the past year.
FILM stars will be taking to the red carpet tomorrow night for this year's British Academy of Film and Television Arts Film Awards.
Atonement, the period drama starring Keira Knightley and James McAvoy, is hotly tipped to be the big winner at this year's ceremony, having already picked up a Golden Globe award and several Oscar nominations.
But it is a perfect example of the fact awards do not necessarily reflect popular opinion.
Atonement may have received 14 Bafta nominations but it wasn't such a hit with cinemagoers, only just scraping into the top 20 films of the year at the Odeon in Kettering.
Other contenders for the best film award are No Country for Old Men, set in the American West and starring Tommy Lee Jones, and There Will Be Blood, starring Daniel Day Lewis as a self-made oil tycoon, each nominated for nine Baftas, but they make no appearance in the cinema's blockbuster list, the first not having been screened there, and the second due for national release next Friday.
So if cinema ticket sales have no bearing when it comes to award nominations, how does the academy decide who gets the gongs?
The awards were established to "recognise, honour and reward individuals for outstanding achievement in films" and the nominees and winners are determined by a panel of people who work in the film industry.
Only the winner of the Rising Star Award, for an actor or actress who has demonstrated exceptional talent and ambition, is determined by a public vote.
The Odeon's most popular film of 2007, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, received just two Bafta nominations for production design and special effects, while Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, the cinema's second most popular film, got just one nomination.
Marketing manager at the Odeon in Kettering Simon Hopkins said: "It's often the case that films nominated for awards are not the ones that pull in the largest local audiences since it's clear that the family market is the dominant force.
"What's interesting about Bafta's best picture nominations is that, particularly this year, it appears that critical and popular taste do differ – Atonement only just squeezed into our top 20 – but the best thing about cinema is the variety of different experiences on offer, from sheer entertainment to thought provoking pieces.
"Of course two of the five, No Country For Old Men and There Will Be Blood, while both excellent, have had quite limited releases, meaning we aren't able to show them immediately.
"However, both will be picked by Odeon Kettering in the near future as I'm sure they will be award winners soon.
"Indeed, with the wish to cater for more eclectic taste, we will soon start a new weekly season called Director's Chair, which will screen films that have a more defined appeal."
So what do film fans think of the list of Bafta nominees?
Dan Whiting, 26, of Wellingborough, said: "My favourite film last year was The Simpsons Movie but I'm not really surprised it hasn't been nominated for much.
"It's just not the sort of film you expect to win awards."
And Jenny Smithurst, 29, also of Wellingborough, said: "I did go to see Atonement and I enjoyed it but it would be nice to see the films that are the most popular in the cinemas win awards for a change."

Frankly my dear, it's the best movie line!!
"Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn" has topped a poll as the Greatest Movie Line of all time.
The quote is spoken by Clark Gable's character Rhett Butler in the 1939 classic Gone with the Wind, as he walks out on wife Scarlett.
The film is one of the most popular and beloved motion pictures ever to grace the silver screen and appears three times in the top 50 list of best lines in cinema history.
Gable's "You need to be kissed. And often. And by someone who knows how." appears at number 30.
And Vivien Leigh stars at 33 with Scarlett's quote "As God is my witness, as God is my witness, they're not going to lick me! I'm going to live through this, and when it's all over, I'll never be hungry again - no, nor any of my folks! If I have to lie, steal, cheat, or kill! As God is my witness, I'll never be hungry again."
The poll of 10,000 film fanatics was conducted by global market research company www.onepoll.com.
Humphrey Bogart's line "Here's looking at you kid" in Casablanca (1942) appears at number two in the poll.
Whilst Colin Firth takes third place for his romantic gesture in Bridget Jones's Diary (2001) when he tells Bridget "I like you just the way you are".
John Sewell, spokesman for www.onepoll.com said: "This poll pays homage to the classic stars of Hollywood's golden age – with Clark Gable, Humphrey Bogart, James Cagney and Judy Garland all appearing in the top 10.
"The results prove that films of the thirties and forties are both enduring and popular – with today's generations able to recognize lines from blockbusters such as Casablanca and The Wizard of Oz."
The line "Do you feel lucky, punk" spoken by Clint East in Dirty Harry (1971) takes fourth place, whilst Haley Joel Osment is at number five with his eerie line "I see dead people" in The Sixth Sense (1999).
Only seven women - Judy Garland, Sally Field, Vivien Leigh, Estelle Reine, Olivia Newton John, Robin Wright Penn and Lucy Lui – feature in the list of top 50 greatest movie lines.
