Antiques expert will be special guest at fete

A hospice's Easter fundraising event will be opened by an expert from the Antiques Roadshow.

Christopher Payne will be the special guest at the Lakelands Day Care Hospice's Easter fete in Corby on Sunday, March 28, at midday.

Expert antique dealers from Gildings in Market Harborough will be giving advice on items and there will be a chocolate and bottle tombola.

The hospice's community fundraiser, Julia Rattigan, said: "This is one of our major fundraising events of the year. We usually raise about 4,000, which is a fair bit of money for us, at an event like that.

"All the events are indoors just to be on the safe side in terms of the weather.

"Last year it was lovely so we were able to branch out onto the patio. It is a well attended event.

"Some women who are current and former patients have made some new crafts for this year's fete."

Mr Payne, who is the third generation of furniture experts in his family, left auctioneers Sotheby's in 1994 after gaining 25 years' experience.

Since then, he has been acting as a curator for private collectors while continuing to appear regularly as an expert on furniture and sculpture on the BBC's Antiques Roadshow.

He is a council member of the Furniture History Society.

Stalls selling crafts, plants, books, records, teas, home-made cakes and toys will be among the other features of the day.

Organisers are asking for donations from individuals and companies to help set up the tombola.

Easter eggs, chocolates and bottles of alcohol are being collected.

Lakelands Hospice provides free of charge care to patients with life limiting illnesses in the area, including cancer and heart failure.

It provides support for their carers and families and the hospice is now offering a 'hospice at home' service.

Since opening in 2001, the hospice has helped more than 2,000 families in the area and continues to grow in order to meet the need for respite day care.

The facility doesn't get government funding and relies entirely on voluntary donations and support from the community to remain open.

In 2010, Lakelands needs to raise more than 350,000 to keep its doors open.

The fete is from midday until 4pm at the hospice in Butland Road.
