Another big name store set to open

Another big name store is coming to Corby – the latest in a string of shop openings.

Sports Direct is the latest big-name brand to move to the town.

It is due to open a shop in a large unit formerly occupied by Allied Carpets at the Peel Centre in Phoenix Parkway.

The move means that with homeware store The Range also opening, the retail park will have all its units filled for the first time since Focus left its large premises there more than three years ago.

Allied Carpets went into administration in July last year and its store at Phoenix Parkway closed shortly afterwards.

Sports Direct is the UK's leading sports retailer and has about 350 stores in the UK.

It sells brands owned by its subsidiaries including Dunlop, Slazenger and Lonsdale as well as other big names including Adidas, Nike, Umbro, Reebok and Puma at discounted prices.

Other companies to have recently opened stores in Corby town centre include Crazy Udder, Cafe Con Leche and Ethel Austin.

And Argos Extra is due to move into a unit on the Oasis Retail Park in Alexandra Road.

The opening of Sports Direct is expected to create a number of new jobs although a formal opening date is yet to be announced.

Dane Lees, 19, from the Beanfield Estate in Corby, said: "I think it's the right kind of shop for Corby.

"I often go in there when I go shopping in other towns and I think it's really good that we're getting one of our own. You can get all kinds of stuff in there.

"It's one of the only places you can buy a cheap football for a kickabout in the street."

Simon Sharples, 18, also from the town's Beanfield Estate, said: "You can get tracksuit bottoms in there for quite reasonable prices. It's not as expensive as the other sports shops in town.

"I'll definitely go there to get things like football boots and trainers."

No-one from Sports Direct was available for comment yesterday.
