Animal work sees Petrina up for award

A disabled woman who has turned her home into a refuge for abandoned animals has been nominated for a Pride in Northamptonshire award.

Petrina Alderman helped to launch Northamptonshire Animals Needing Nurturing and Adoption (Nanna) at her home in Irthlingborough just over four years ago.

Since then the charity has helped more than 4,500 animals and in recognition of Mrs Alderman's role as the charity's chairman she has been put forward for this year's awards, which are run by the Evening Telegraph, its sister paper the Chronicle & Echo and event supporter Northamptonshire County Council to recognise the county's unsung heroes.

Mrs Alderman said: "I'm disabled, which restricts what I can do, but I can give animals shelter while the charity finds them new homes.

"I feel honoured to be part of Nanna. The animals give me a reason to wake up in the morning.

"I'm very embarrassed to have been nominated for the award and feel it should be for all the volunteers at the charity."

Mrs Alderman was nominated by Nanna volunteer Pauline Wicks, who said: "Petrina is a selfless person who not only gives her time, but her home too.

"The telephone is constantly ringing with people wanting advice about what to do with an animal they may have found or a concern over their own pet.

"She is a remarkably caring person."

The awards will be made at a presentation ceremony on September 26 at Wicksteed Park, Kettering, hosted by Big Brother series 2 winner Brian Dowling.
