Animal charity scoops a prestigious accolade

A charity celebrating its 20th anniversary this year has been honoured with a major award.

Little Irchester-based Animals In Need received the award for outstanding success at the inaugural Wetnose Awards organised by Wetnose Animal Aid.

The awards ceremony was held last week at the House of Lords and Animals In Need was one of only 14 animal rescue organisations from around the world to be honoured.

Animals In Need founder Roy Marriott said: "The awards are designed to celebrate the achievements of grass roots charities rather than the major ones and we were very proud to receive an award.

"It means a great deal to all our volunteers."

The charity received its award from Lester Middlehurst, who has written for The Mirror and te Daily Mail Newspapers.

Other household names at the event included actresses Jenny Seagrove and Lorraine Chase, television presenters Nick Knowles and Wendy Turner, Ann Widdecombe MP, stars from television shows such as EastEnders, The Bill, New Tricks and Judge John Deed and long-time supporter of Wetnose DJ David Hamilton.

Mr Marriott said: "It was nice to see them but most of all I enjoyed meeting the people from the other grass roots charities because they do such hard work.

"The winners came from all over the world and it was lovely to see them being recognised for all they do."

Among the charities which were honoured were Safe Haven for Donkeys in Israel, Home and Away Animal Welfare in Sri Lanka, Borneo Orangutans Survival, Elephants for Africa and Animal Kingdom in the Philippines.

Three RAF service dogs – springer spaniel Billie, who works in arms and explosives and recently returned from Iraq; German shepherd Kubo, who works as a police dog, and spaniel Duke, who works in vehicle search – and their five handlers also received a special award for bravery, for

the first time, from Air Marshall The Lord Craig of Radley OBE.

Wetnose Animal Aid International is the animal alternative to Red Nose.

It was launched 10 years ago by Andrea and Gavin Gamby-Boulger who run their own boarding and rescue centre.
