Amy gets through millions of words
Corby Business Academy librarian off to London: Amy McKay. 24/01/12
School librarian Amy McKay is in London today to join 11 other judges who will begin selecting the nation’s best children’s book.
And it’s been no mean feat. Since being picked to be a member of the Carnegie and Greenaway awards judging panel she’s had to read 107 books – that’s roughly seven million words.
Amy, 31, librarian at Corby Business Academy and chairman of the East Midlands Youth Libraries Group, said: “It’s been much tougher than I imagined.
“I’ve had no real life for three months and I’ve got bags under my eyes from late night reading sessions but I’ve loved it.”
Amy will help draw up a shortlist of about 20 books from the 107 nominations and the winner will be known in June.
She said: “The awards can make or break an author and it’s been a real privilege to be a judge. There have been some exceptional books.”
