A mixed report for police body

Northamptonshire Police Authority has been told it is performing adequately by auditors.

The county's police authority has been subject to an independent report released today by the Audit Commission and Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary, who rank forces on a scale of one to four.

The authority's performance was given a score of two, which represents adequate performance.

The inspectors praised the authority's leadership and commitment to the

community.

Deidre Newham, chairman of the authority, said: "I am not happy that we are adequate because I would like us to be much higher, but there are areas that we knew we needed to look at.

"There were not any real surprises in the report and there were not many recommendations for us to do in the report.

"It said we have had significant improvements and highlighted 21 of our strengths.

"We are in a very good position to progress in the future."

The authority will meet to appoint a team to look at the recommendations and come up with a plan of action based on them."

The Audit Commission's Nigel Toms said: "The authority is now working much better with Northamptonshire Police Force than it has for a number of years and is well-placed to make Northamptonshire safer.

"However, there is still a lot to do to ensure every penny is well spent and to balance competing priorities. The early signs are promising and the authority is committed to the action required to deliver a strategic plan to engage with its communities and reduce crime across the county. But continued vigilance is needed if it is to meet these aims."

A report card showing the performance of the county's police force is due out today, which will look at the way the force tackles crime across the county as well as other issues such as value for money.

Copies of the report are available by visiting the Audit Commissions's website at www.audit-commission.gov.uk.
