A close shave for Steve helps Finley
A BEAVERS leader has had a hair-raising time to the tune of £600 in aid of a boy with a rare condition.
Steve Burt, 45, from Ash Grove, Desborough, shaved his head and beard to help raise the money towards the 2,000 needed to treat an eight-month-old with a rare bone growth disease.
Finley Armer has been diagnosed with severe positional plagiocephaly and severe brachycephaly, which flattens the back and side of his head.
Mr Burt decided to get involved because Finley's brother Hayden, seven, attends his Beavers group.
He said: "It was a brilliant event but my head has been feeling the cold – maybe I should have done it in the summer.
"I have had a moustache for almost 30 years and people at work didn't recognise me when I turned up today. I was hoping to raise 100 to 200 but people have really been generous.
"I think because it is a local family at Christmas the community really pulled together and dug deep."
Over 30 cubs, beavers and parents watched as Mr Burt had the close shave.
Finley's mum Donna, of Regent Street, Desborough said: "The head shave went really well and Steve looks quite different. So far we have done a sponsored walk and since the story went into the Evening Telegraph we have almost raised to 2,000 we need.
"We have had lots of different people donating money and wanting to help and this is a really nice way to get to our target.
"Finley is still having to go down to London for check ups every four to six weeks but at the moment we are preparing for a family Christmas."
After consulting with a doctor in London, Finley was given a special helmet to wear to help the growth of his skull.
He will have to wear this 23 hours a day over the next 10 months. If he didn't wear the helmet his head would continue growing abnormally meaning he would have problems in later life with his jaw, ears and skull.
