£1m sport aid within grasp

The county is on target to win a £1m bonus for sporting equipment.

Sport England has pledged the cash to the county if 21,000 more people manage to take part in three 30-minute workouts each week over a three year period – the equivalent of a one per cent rise each year.

The latest figures from their active people survey, which monitors people's exercising activity, shows the county has recorded a 0.98 per cent increase since the start of the survey, meaning the cash bonus is within reach.

Although the county has had an increase overall, the results for the north of the county have been mixed.

Corby and Kettering boroughs have both seen an increase, of 0.68 per cent and 1.27 per cent respectively, but Wellingborough has seen a drop of 0.33 per cent and East Northamptonshire has dropped by 2.75 per cent, the largest in the region.

One of the people who has taken up exercise as a result of the Evening Telegraph's Get Active campaign is Jonny Coxell, of Lewis Road, Kettering.

He said: "I did enjoy doing sports before but it was a bit hit and miss.

"At least now I know if I skip a gym session or don't go to football training I am letting other people down and that gives me the incentive to go.

"I know there is a credit crunch now so people might be giving up their gym memberships, but it doesn't cost anything to go for a walk or to go on a bike ride."

In the initial active people survey in 2005 the north of the county's average for people managing the three 30-minute workouts was 20.73 per cent, but now it is at 20.44 per cent.

The next figures for the second full year of the scheme will be released in November, which will give the county one more year to hit the three per cent increase target.

There is also an added incentive for individuals getting down to the gym or joining a sports team in the form of the Northamptonshire Sports Get Active award.

The award is presented at the Northamptonshire Sports Awards ceremony in November to someone who has achieved sporting or exercise success over the last 12 months.
