£1 a litre at Rushden garage

Motorists are set to have more money in their pockets as petrol stations across the county break the £1- per-litre barrier.

Petrol is now 99.9p a litre at a number of stations including the Shell Garage next to Croyland Car Megastore in Rushden, Waitrose in Rushden and Morrisons in Corby.

The 1 barrier was broken yesterday with Croyland slashing the price of unleaded from 103.9p, Waitrose from 104.9p and Morrisons from 105.9p to 99.9p.

Croyland Car Megastore general manager Mark Swindells said: "We are absolutely thrilled we have been able to break the 1 barrier. We are a family-run business and are all about customer service, so this is brilliant for us.

"We want our existing customers to know we will look after them and we want to encourage new customers to use us because we sell quality fuel at the best price.

"The oil prices are dropping but it will still be a while before prices are back to normal."

Jemma Williams, section manager at Waitrose, said: "We have been able to drop our prices because oil prices have gone down so we are able to reflect that. We are really committed to delivering the best quality and best prices in the area, so hopefully our customers will see that and we will attract more new customers."

On Saturday the Evening Telegraph reported reduced petrol prices at garages in the county by about 3p, with prices as low as 104.9p per litre at Tesco in Kettering and 106.9p per litre at Morrisons in Corby on Friday.

But the price is even lower for customers now, with Asda dropping the price of unleaded to 99.9p and diesel to 111.9p.

It comes after unleaded first rose above the 1-a-litre barrier in November last year and continued to rise. At their peak on July 18, the UK average for unleaded was 119.9p and diesel was 133.4p.

A spokesman for PetrolPrices.com, which monitors prices, said: "The price cuts by Asda and Morrisons should force other retailers to lower their prices too, meaning we could see falling prices right across the country over the next few weeks."

Sandra Baxter, 61, of Ennerdale Road, Rushden, said: "It is great they have been able to get it that low and these days fuel prices are affecting everyone.

"It will certainly go a long way to help people cutting back, especially if this makes all the other petrol stations drop their prices."

Diesel prices are still quite high with the cheapest diesel coming from Asda at 111.9p per litre.
