Vote for heroes of education

The time has come for you to vote in our Pride in Education Awards.

A special panel of judges will choose the winners of the majority of the categories from the many worthy candidates we have received, but we are asking our readers to choose the winner of our Unsung Hero Award from the shortlist of finalists below. The award is designed to pay tribute to those who make a significant contribution to the school community behind the scenes and have a positive impact on day-to-day life.

Lizzie Usher

Lizzie Usher, 17, who studies at The Ferrers Specialist Arts College in Higham Ferrers, works to improve the lives of other young people through the youth groups she has set up and her place on youth councils.

She helped develop and runs a lunchtime club called Raise, where children from Year 7 meet once a week to play games and discuss issues

they have.

Through her place on the school council, she helped improve the state of the toilets and organised a Jeans for Genes day, which raised money for a charity for genetic diseases.

In October, she will travel to Uganda and represent her school at a conference on conflict resolution with the Ferrers' sister school.

Sue Deery

Sue Deery, 59, refused to let breast cancer stop her serving her pupils as a lunchtime supervisor at Loddington Church of England Primary School.

She continued working after being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007 and only reluctantly took a break for a mastectomy in August that year.

Instead of taking it easy since returning, she has added to her lunchtime duties by becoming an associate governor of the school and started going in on Wednesday afternoons to help the children practise reading.

Headteacher of the school Sue Walters said: "I have never once heard Sue complain. Nothing is ever too much for her and she is always positive and cheerful."

Matthew Wordingham

Matthew Wordingham, who is in Year 12 at The Ferrers Specialist Arts College, has worked tirelessly to edit and publish the school's newsletter, The Ferrers News, since September last year.

The Ferrers News is read by students, teachers and parents and gives out important information about the life of the school.

He gives up his free time at weekends and in the evenings trawling through the newsletters and emails and transforming his news team's work into worthy articles. He manages a group of four Year 9 students and helps them improve their writing.

All this has to be done to a deadline and Matthew has successfully managed it around his academic studies.
