Pupils encouraged to aim high for the future

The Aimhigher Roadshow pulled into a Corby school to give pupils an insight into the education options open to them in the future.

Year 9 pupils at Corby Business Academy attended the event and were given advice to help them plan their future.

Aimhigher Roadshow organiser Paul Payne said he was impressed with the positive feedback from students.

He said: "Year 9 is a pivotal point in a pupil's education, as it is when they will start choosing the subjects they will study at GCSE level.

"At Aimhigher we want to make sure that students think carefully about their choices and begin to consider what career path they might like to follow in the future.

"We provide them with information booklets to take away that will give useful advice and guidance, as well basic information about college and university life."

The roadshow involves a 30-minute information session, as well as a short video.

The National Aimhigher Roadshow is a Department for Business, Innovation & Skills initiative designed to promote the benefits and dispel the myths about higher education.

The mobile units contain a plasma screen, notebook, laptops and a DVD to watch.

Using the hand-held voting pads, pupils can answer questions and give their opinions about higher education at the touch of a button.

The roadshow tours schools in areas and communities with traditionally low levels of participation in higher education.

According to the 2001 census, the proportion of people in Corby with degree-level qualifications, at 8.5 per cent, is the lowest of all areas in England and Wales.

And 39.3 people were said to have no GCSE-equivalent qualifications at all, although these figures are believed to have improved since the last census after dramatic improvements in educational provision in the town.

School vice-principal Avril Bartley-Smith said: "Our pupils went awayconsidering further and higher education.

"They were also more aware that they can aspire to achieving higher."

Pupil Chelsea Grant said: "I found it really interesting and think it will help me in my option choices."
