The new principal of Tresham College has said bringing the ageing Wellingborough campus up to the standards of its neighbouring sites in Corby and Kettering is among his objectives.

The Wellingborough base was built in the 1960s and despite being developed since then it stands years behind the recently-built campuses in the two other towns.

However, new principal Stuart Wesselby has told the Evening Telegraph he wants to change that and upgrade the campus and bring it ‘on par’ with its neighbours.

Mr Wesselby, who returned to the college after leaving two years ago as vice-prinicipal, has already started a list of options for the campus in Church Street.

He said: “I no longer want the Wellingborough campus to be the poor relation of the other sites we have.

“I have asked for a set of options to be put together so we can look what can be done before passing on our findings to the chair of governors.

“It could be a total rebuild, a refurbishment of the building or even selling it and moving elsewhere.

“We’re at a very early stage, but I can say is this is one of my priorities and I’m keen to get something done.”

One problem the college could face is a lack of funding.

Although the finances are ‘quite strong’ at the college, iys bosses may need to secure capital funding from the Government – something they have tried to do already without success.

Recently the college failed in an application for £1.2m of capital funding for the Wellingborough campus.

Mr Wesselby said: “We’re not deterred

“We will keep looking at ways to fund such a project - whether it be from Government grants or becoming partners with businesses.

“Again, we have a list of options for funding and we are looking at them all.”

In Kettering, the college moved from its St Mary’s campus and Old Boys School campus into its new building in Windmill Road in 2007.

Four years later, the college’s campus in Corby was redeveloped at a cost of £36m.

The Wellingborough campus provides learning in IT and mechanics as well as providing workshops in engineering.
