Little Lego engineers build miniature village

Young creators designed a village of Olympic proportions at a special workshop.

Independent Laxton Junior School in Oundle gave pupils from Year 1 up to Year 6 the opportunity to create an Olympic village made entirely out of Lego and Duplo in the school hall last week.

The school is the first independent school in the country to become a Lego Education Centre, and has incorporated Lego into its curriculum to help the pupils’ problem solving and teamwork abilities.

Each year of pupils was given a certain part of the village to complete.

Sarah Ashby, head of art at the school and organiser of the workshop, said: “The children loved their challenges.

“They were given opportunities that many can only dream of – becoming engineers, architects, designers and scientists.

“They encountered problems and invented their own solutions, making discoveries along the way.”

Good move. I and many readers here grew up with Lego, the original metal meccano and many other tactile things. We were a generation of budding engineers. Its amazing how many hours of problem solving fun you can have with these. Heck i would still have fun with it today if they sold the original stuff. Not the rubbish pre made stuff they sell now. I urge any parents to buy their younger kids Lego or Meccano original for Birthday and save their brains. :)
