Honours given at awards night

Dozens of college pupils have been commended for their hard work and determination at an annual awards ceremony.

Former drug user Craig McCallum, who turned his life around thanks to a Prince's Trust course, was among the winners.

More than 40 pupils from Tresham Institute were honoured at the annual student awards ceremony, which was held at the end of last month.

Mr McCallum, 27, won the Young People's Engagement Prince's Trust Learner of the Year award.

Mr McCallum said: "I was told about the course through my drugs worker and it's helped to change my life.

"I'd been told about the programme once before when I was on probation and the second time around decided to do it.

"I knew I needed to sort myself out.

"I was going through a lot of problems. I had no confidence and a lot of problems in my life and been taking heroin and crack.

"I didn't really know where I was going and don't think I'd be where I am now if it wasn't for the Prince's Trust.

Mr McCallum, 27, took part in the trust's 12-week Team programme and went on to help run other teams when he completed it.

He has since gone on to study counselling courses and undertake work for Tresham and he paid tribute to Tresham, the Prince's Trust and Wayne Taylor from the charity.

Tresham works as a delivery partner with the Prince's Trust and manages its Team programme across the county.

The majority of students receiving awards at the ceremony will be moving on to further studies at universities, continuing into other further education or going into work.

Principal Mark Silverman said: "Celebrating our learner success stories is always a highlight of my role as principal at Tresham.

"This year's awards evening is an opportunity to look back over the past year and recognise individual students' enthusiasm and commitment to learning, which is incredibly inspiring and heartening.

"Success stories like these are a credit to the staff at Tresham as we have so much to celebrate."

Northamptonshire Newspapers sponsored the sixth form studies award.
