A school is delaying its plans to convert to academy status so it can concentrate on improving standards.

Lodge Park Technology College, in Shetland Way, Corby, was due to become an academy this term.

But it has now taken the decision to postpone that until the next academic year in September after it was placed in special measures by Ofsted in November last year.

Far from seeing the decision as a negative, principal Guy Shearer is optimistic the extra time will allow the school to source more funding from the Government.

The school has already taken grant-making body David Ross Foundation on board as a sponsor to aid the conversion.

Mr Shearer said: “There is not a lot of Government money around but we are optimistic we will get support.

“So much effort has gone into improving the school, so it is about not taking our eye off the ball.

“We are very fortunate the David Ross Foundation employs people to do the work on the conversion so we don’t have to take too many resources away from the kids.

“We are concentrating on this year’s results, and already more than half of our kids have got a C in maths.”

Ofsted will be visiting the school every six months to check on progress, and Mr Shearer said he would welcome a visit before that.

Following the inspection, the school was told it needed to increase the pace of lessons, encourage the sharing of good teaching practice and to monitor the quality of lessons.

Attendance was also highlighted as being a concern.
