Why Betty Boop is in the pink

As you already know, my husband, my daughter and I have been going back and forth recently, discussing what kind of pet to add to our family.

We do, of course, have Tommy the hamster, but since he only gets out of bed at 10pm for approximately five minutes, he's not exactly what you'd call good company.

My daughter and husband have been campaigning to get a dog, and after recently reading Marley and Me by John Grogan, I started to think the same way.

The crazy thing is that if you've read the book or seen the film, you'll know that Marley was completely bonkers and not the kind of dog you'd want at all.

He ate the garage, he dived through windows and broke the doors; but in spite of it all, the family's lives were made so much richer by having him as their companion.

So after reading the book, we started thinking seriously about the possibility of sharing our lives with a four-legged friend, and I did

lots of research.

Big dogs, small dogs, fat dogs, skinny dogs – I went through the pros and cons of all of them until my mind was fuzzy and my eyes were on stalks.

We couldn't decide on the type of dog we wanted, until one day we were looking at the puppies for sale website and up popped a picture of six fluffy white bundles.

I knew at that moment that our future family member was one of those pups, and after a few minutes, my husband did too.

So last week we all went to meet our new addition – a little ball of cotton wool, with black eyes and a teeny black nose.

Our daughter was delighted with the idea of having a pet she can actually see, and she quickly made friends not just with the puppies, but with the mummy and daddy dogs too.

So we pick up our bundle in early June, and after a bit of discussion, my daughter and I have come up with a name – Betty Boop.

When I told my friend Claire what we were calling her, she thought I was off my rocker. "What's next?" she asked. "A bright pink, fluffy bed?"

"Of course not", I replied, as I sat looking at my latest purchase.

A bright, pink, fluffy bed.
