The fickle hearts and funny ways

One day before half-term my daughter was accidentally pushed over and ended up sitting on one of her classmates.

She is extremely sensitive and even though the teacher (and the little boy she'd sat on) assured her it was OK, my daughter burst out crying and couldn't stop.

It got so bad that by lunchtime she was refusing her lunch and complaining of a sore tummy. When I picked her up she announced in the middle of the playground, "That's it – I'm finished with school and won't be coming back."

Of course the next day she did have to go back, but her adversity to school had become so bad that by the time we reached the school gates, she was welded to my legs, screaming hysterically.

I tried to negotiate with her and said, "When you start to feel sad, just think about how great it will be when we get our puppy." To which she replied: "Well when we do get her, I'll never get to spend any time

with her because I have to come to this place!"

She then turned to me and said; "So what do you do all day that means I have to come here all the time?"

When I told her she needed to go to school regardless of what I did, she didn't believe me. In her eyes I only too happily push her into

school so I can head off to some magical place that doesn't include her.

It seemed that whatever I said, she had an answer for, so in the end I just had to leave her in the capable hands of her teacher and trudge my way back home feeling completely to blame for my daughter's despair. I spent all day worrying about my poor little angel, keeping my phone on during yoga classes and nursing that panicky feeling that mums hold in their hearts on a regular basis.

When I went to pick her up that evening I expected to see a quivering, sad little girl. Instead there she was, waving wildly, jumping up and down, and telling me all about the wonderful PE session she'd had that day.

"I had the best day ever mum!" she said.

Well I certainly wish I could say the same for myself – thanks to my dear daughter, my nerves are shot to pieces!
