Testing time proved I was to be a mum

I recently saw a lady coming out of the doctors clutching a bag which had Pregnancy Information Pack emblazoned over the front.

With a huge smile on her face, it was obvious that she had just found out she was pregnant, and it brought back memories of the day I found out I was expecting my daughter.

I had taken a trip to Asda to buy a pregnancy-testing kit and bought the first one I saw.

Unfortunately, as I headed for the door the burglar alarm went off and the security man headed over, sticking his nose into the bag to see what was inside. Seeing a pregnancy test staring back at him, he straightened up, patted me on the shoulder and said: "On you go my dear". So off I went.

When I eventually took the test it was hard to tell if it was positive or not as the little pink dot was very faint.

So I did what every paranoid possible mum-to-be does – I phoned the number on the back of the box.

With visions of some dusty old phone ringing in an abandoned office somewhere, I waited to hear that yes, sure enough I was indeed pregnant.

But me being me, I needed another opinion, so off I went to my friend Claire's house for her expert thoughts.

She had given birth to twins a couple of years before so was bound to know the ins and outs of pregnancy kits. Unfortunately, when I knocked on her door, clutching the pregnancy test in my sweaty palm, the door was opened not by Claire but by her mum who had popped in for a visit.

Stuffing the test back into my handbag, I spent the next half-hour making small talk with Claire's mum, but I swear I didn't hear a word she was saying – all I could think about was the test.

Finally we were alone and I grabbed the test out of my bag and shoved it into Claire's hands. To say she was excited was an understatement, and for the next few minutes we just jumped up and down, shouting and screaming, looking at the test, while the twins both asked why mummy and her friend were so excited over what looked suspiciously like a pen?

Of course after the euphoria of discovering I was pregnant came the sickness, the sciatica, the stretch-marks, the uncontrollable emotions and the heartburn. But that's another story.
