Have you ever had one of those ideas that you think could change the world?
The sort where, if you were a cartoon character, a light bulb would appear over your head with a large ding? The sort where, if you were an ancient Greek mathematician you would leap out of the bath with a cry of eureka! and run down the A14 with nothing but a rubber duck to protect your modesty?
I’m sure there have been dozens of occasions where I’ve disappeared off into a dream world, thinking of how I could make a task easier. I’m the least handy person in the world though and, even if I had that light bulb moment, I wouldn’t know what to do next.
This week, a chap called Mark Zuckerberg floated his company on the stock market. It was a company that spawned from an idea that he had while he was at college – Facebook.
Now I know that there are different stories about exactly how the company was founded, but Zuckerberg is the man who has his name on the deeds – he’s Facebook’s chief executive.
To explain it in a way that makes us all feel rather sick: in 2004, when Zuckerberg was 20-years-old, he and three classmates founded Facebook. In 2010 he was named Time magazine’s Man of the Year and has an estimated personal wealth of around $17 billion.
He’s a multi-billionaire at the age of 28 – and all because he had an idea and decided to do something about it – that’s quite an amazing story.
You may or may not use Facebook, but it’s part of modern life now. I remember, back in about 1997 or 1998, how my group of friends laughed at the first of our pack to turn up with a mobile phone. “What do you want one of them for?” we mocked, “Text message? Who have you got to send text messages to?”.
Can you imagine a world without them now, though? I don’t know how businesses ever managed to work before email and the internet, and at home we even find it difficult to comprehend a time when we couldn’t pause and rewind live television!
The moral of this story is: if you have one of those ideas that you think can change the world then why not try and do something about it?
You could have a cool $17 billion in your bank account by the end of the year – a thought that beats the winter blues, does it not!
