That’s where we find ourselves now. It’s just gone half past winter, very nearly a quarter to spring, and the world of the rich and famous is in the throes of patting itself on the back. Last week saw the sixteenth annual National Television Awards at the O2 Arena – and that just shows how big this event has come. If the O2 isn’t full to the rafters then it looks empty, and tens of thousands were there to see if EastEnders or Corrie would pick up the Best Serial Drama gong.
The NTAs are our equivalent to the Emmies in the States, although we haven’t taken it quite as far as they have. Over the pond they have six or seven different Best Actor awards for comedy, drama, miniseries… and that’s just in the Primetime Emmies! There’s a whole other ceremony for daytime TV!
It’s been designed to give as many people a gong as possible because, let’s be honest, when you’re that rich and famous, the only thing money can’t buy is recognition from your peers!
The Oscar nominations were out last week too and, I’m rather embarrassed to say, I haven’t heard of half the shortlist for Best Picture. The one that’s expected to clear up is The Artist – if you haven’t heard about it, it’s a black and white silent movie that harks back to the days of the silver screen.
So who’s got it right? Is it the NTAs and Emmies who give to awards to the most popular nominees, or the Oscars, who seem to be rewarding the ones with the most artistic merit? If it’s the former then I’d argue the case for Alan Rickman to be named Best Actor for Snape in Harry Potter til I’m blue in the face!
One final word on awards – the Brits are in a couple of weeks and we’re giving away tickets on Connect FM this and next week. I’m sure I’ll be talking about it on my afternoon show later. James Blake is leading the nominees for Best British Male… no I haven’t heard of him either. I’ll get my coat.
