Suffering in the name of art

My daughter is completely addicted to arts and crafts and as soon as she wakes up each morning, she sets about working on her creations before we've even woken up.

She makes puppets, robots, fish, frogs and everything in between. She's worked on abstract creations consisting solely of cardboard boxes and pipe cleaners and sees everything as a potential tool for her crafts.

Just the other day she saw me throwing away the remains of some frozen vegetables, and begged to use them in her crafts. And I've lost count of the number of cardboard boxes she's liberated from the recycling pile, which later turn up as houses, animals and cars.

To be honest, while I absolutely love her creations and really think she's got a huge talent (but I'm bound to say that aren't I?), there is always the problem of where on earth to keep everything that comes my way.

I have a bureau in my study which is full of paintings, while the back of my car is turning into something of a gallery, with pasta-crafts, finger paintings and decorated toilet rolls on display for all to see.

But I have to admit that sometimes I've returned her crafts to the recycling pile, though it isn't always easy to keep their departure from my daughter. Several weeks ago her and my dad made a huge cardboard tube craft, measuring at least four feet, with a teabag box stuck on the end of it. She refused to tidy it up and having tripped over it a dozen times, it was marched back to the recycling bin to start a new life in someone else's house.

My mum hasn't been so lucky, however. Last year she decided to recycle an egg and cereal box creation, not knowing that an hour later my dad would pick my daughter up and pretend to plonk her into the recycling box. As he lifted the lid my daughter squealed, but it wasn't because she thought she was really going into the box; it was because she had seen her art and was utterly appalled that it had gone into the recycling.

My poor mum quickly got it out, blamed my dad for putting it in there by mistake, and proudly displayed it on a shelf in the kitchen.

That's where it's stayed ever since and something tells me that if my daughter has her way, it will be there for some time to come.
