Shocked at death of close friend
I was shocked to hear a close friend of mine from the army had passed away, I had served 15 years in the army and Eddy Doyle was a very close buddy but it was the way I had heard about the news that was so different. We had been in many life threatening scrapes over the years and I held great respect for the huge man, Eddie stood about 6 foot 3 in tall, solid as a rock and the most wonderful sense of humour.
I had not heard from Eddie for a number of years now, as with most things in life when our service in the Army came to an end we lost touch, I mean we did communicate a few times afterwards but it fizzled out. I knew Eddie was married to Anne and had two Daughters. I was fast asleep one night when something woke me up in the bedroom, in the dark I could see a black silhouette sitting in a chair in the corner, a huge frame of a man. And then I saw the red light of a cigarette or Cigar grow bright as who ever was there took a draw, and then I could smell the heavy smell of a cigar, "Hiya Binksy" I knew that voice, I sat up in bed and in the dark smiled and said " What the **** are you doing in my bedroom Eddie" and he gave a deep baritone laugh, and Eddie said " I popped off, a huge heart attack, I went too soon Den, I have things to sort out with my girls, when I arrived at my new home I winged that much, someone said your best mate is a Medium, So I am here", I looked at Ev my wife who was soundly asleep oblivious to me talking, I said "Let's go downstairs OK" and just like that Eddie was gone, I got up put on my dressing gown and went downstairs to the living room, as I neared the living room door, I could hear Ben our Cross German Shepherd Dog growling, I opened the door, sitting on the sofa was Eddie, still pulling on his cigar and sitting right next to him and facing him snarling was Ben, we had always suspected that Ben had jumped on the sofa when we had gone bed and not in his bed, it must have shocked Ben who is very aware of Spirit to suddenly have this huge hulking man appear next to him on the sofa, I said to Ben "Off" and away he jumped and laid in his bed.
I said "I am so sorry Eddie" and he replied "What about Den, that I died, man its amazing here, I am having the time of my life.....Or my death" as he roared with laughter, you could not help loving this huge warm man, I looked him up and down and he was just as I remember him in his uniform, strong fit for anything.
I didn't look after myself Den, I put on loads of weight, I worked in the office from 8 till 8 and ate the wrong food, I was told constantly by the Doctor, change your life style Mr Doyle or it will have a massive effect on your health.....What they didn't tell me Den was I would have a massive heart attack and die".
I said "So what do you want me to do Eddie, I mean there must be a reason why you woke me up at three in the morning".
Eddie sat there for a minute and threw the cigar onto the rug in the centre of my wooden floor, I shouted "Hey Eddie that will burn the rug" and jumped up, when the cigar suddenly disappeared as it hit the rug, Eddie chuckled "Even you must have realised there is no real cigar here Den", I smiled and Eddie then went on to say " My two girls Charlie or Charlotte and Kaz or Karen have fell out over the money I left, I divorced Anne some years ago and their both at logger heads and at one another's throats, can you deliver a message for me buddy", obviously I knew I would have to, there is a very strong code of conduct in the British Army, you never let a buddy down, in uniform or out.
I replied "OK Eddie " and Eddie gave me information about 'Charlie' and 'Kaz' as evidence of himself being aware, I knew I would have massive problems convincing them that their Father had left me instructions for them.
I found Karen on msn messenger and then sent an email explaining that I knew their Father and they may remember me, in any case for them to ask Anne their Mother who would remember me and that I had some news from their deceased Father, that would be of importance to them, I then left my mobile and my home number. About a week later I received a phone call, it was Karen who said " Hi this is Karen, Eddie's Daughter, I got your email" I asked, "Where is Charlotte", the phone made a sound like being handled and I heard another woman's voice, "This is Charlotte, look we remember you, we where both very young but of course we remember you Dennis but what is all this about", I thought 'here we go' I explained that I was a Clairvoyant Medium and that their Father had visited me and left me with instructions for the his girls", there was silence, then Anne their Mother came on the phone, "Hi Den, a bit hard to take in but you may have heard from others that Eddie had died", I said 'All I wished to do was meet pass on the details and then go, never to disturb them again' and so it was agreed.
A week later I arrived in Oxford, and pulled up outside a huge farm in Abingdon Road, Anne came to the door and I met Karen and Charlotte, we all hugged one another, I would have recognised them anywhere and immediately I smelt a cigar and knew Eddie was here also.
We all then went into the living room of this huge farm house, where there was all sorts of different memento's of Eddie, cups for best shot at Bisley, plaques for orienteering and lost of various photographs and lots of them with me in them. Anne said "How do we know you are genuine and not after money or payment" I replied, "Look Anne me and Eddie where best mates, and you also, I would never rip anyone off, I am after no payment, this is for an Army Buddie" Karen then said, "So how do we know that you where in contact with my Father", just then as if I was watching a video recorder fast forwarding and I was gathering information, I said, "A friend of your died in a car crash on a notorious stretch of Road...Gangsdown Hill", they all looked at one another and Charlotte replied "OK but that would have been on the news" I then replied "You won't have to have star put down, he will get better" Charlotte gasped and sat back "Star is my horse that is very sick, you would not have known that", Eddie then came close and explained about his last day, where he was when he died, about his funeral, his cremation and tributes placed in his coffin, all three women where tearful, I then explained that their Father wanted the farm to remain in the family, it must not be sold, they all looked at one another, his pension and all money in the bank goes three ways, to his estranged wife, Karen and Charlotte. They all sat back and sighed, "At last Charlotte said, the decision was made for us, thank you so much Den" and gave me a hug, just then I heard Eddie say, "Tell her she's pregnant, it's a boy and he's a cutie", I relaid this and all where happy at the news.
I left Oxford and on the return trip home my radio which I was listening to switched off 'Nothing new there I thought' and again heavy cigar smoke and Eddie was sitting next to me, "Thanks mate for that, your a real buddie, I will tell the Angels about you" I replied are they real the Angels, Eddie laughed and said "Of course they are but you ain't going to be one Binksy" I laughed also and with that Eddie left.
That was a few months ago now and there has been no Eddie, and I have heard nothing from Oxford, so there are Angels, maybe my next column. In the photograph, Eddie is at the back, the tall soldier to the right, and I am at the front on the far left.
