Shed loads of rubbish for dad to enjoy

My dad has always had a shed and over the years it has grown close to bursting with the assortment of "man's stuff" he hides in there. At one point he used his shed as something of an aviary for an assortment of budgies.

He had a variety of little houses for them on one side, while the other side housed clipboards, books and notes related to the growth and breeding habits of his beloved flock.

Of course, birds require space to spread their wings, so the shed suddenly grew a chicken wire extension complete with perches and other paraphernalia.

Over the years the budgies gradually disappeared but my dad's fascination with sheds continued. Not content with just one shed, another one suddenly appeared; this time housing tomatoes, beetroot and a variety of other fruits and vegetables. The rubbish continued to grow in both sheds until one day quite recently, my dad discovered a small, unwanted visitor: A mouse. He discovered it when seeds started to go missing, then a hole appeared in his bag of potatoes.

The last straw came when he picked up his gardening jacket to discover the only bits left were the shoulders and arms – the entire back and front were completely gone. My dad was not amused, especially when he found his furry friend's nest – a fluffy hang-out buried deep in his gardening boots, with bits of his jacket added in for extra comfort.

Needless to say, the gloves were off and the mouse was caught and despatched to the nearby countryside (at least that's what he told me).

Since then his sheds have had a bit of a clearout, and I popped in one day to see the extent of it all: old plugs, empty margarine containers, bamboo poles, string, bubble wrap, bits of wood, and old trainers were scattered around the garden.

But was all this old rubbish finally making its way to the bin at last? Of course not. Instead, my dad has just transferred the rubbish to a nice new shed, while his old one is moving to his allotment to acquire new rubbish of its own.

Oh well, while I feel sorry for my mum having to put up with all this shed madness, I do feel happier for the mouse.

After all, he now has three sheds to choose from and this time he might bring his whole family with him to enjoy the fun.
