Old photos make us all squirm
A few weeks ago my aunt took it upon herself to post a stack of embarrassing photos of my entire family on Facebook.
There were ones of me from 1987, with hair back-combed, bright blue eye shadow and way too much blusher.
Then there were some of my parents, with my mum sporting a Deirdre Barlow perm and my dad with huge glasses and an equally large hair flick; while my cousin took great offence when my aunt posted loads of photos of her wearing hand-me-down dresses and huge bows in her hair.
I thought the whole thing was really funny and decided to go through my own oldies but goodies, posting pictures of my brother sporting paisley-patterned pyjamas and enough freckles to make the Milky Bar Kid jealous. Of course he was mortified by this sudden and un-provoked attack by me and my aunt and, before we knew it, he was raiding my mum's photo albums and posting the most embarrassing ones onto his own Facebook account.
Of course we all have embarrassing photos in our distant pasts, and I've always known that one day my daughter will feel the same way about her childhood pics. However, what I didn't know was that it would happen so quickly, as it did just the other day.
I walked into the living room and there she was, holding on to a framed picture and shaking her head furiously.
"Mummy", she said, "you have to get rid of this photo – it's embarrassing!" I looked at the offending item and discovered that it was a really cute pic of her when she was six months old, sporting a huge floppy pink hat and a gummy smile.
"What have I got on my head?" she demanded to know. "It looks like I'm wearing a bride's veil!"
I explained that it was designed so that she didn't get sun-burned, and she screwed up her nose. "Well please will you either cut the hat off, or just throw the whole thing away. It's just too embarrassing!"
I can't believe she's reached the age where she thinks old photos are hideous, and I must say it made me chuckle. After all, if she thinks a floppy hat is embarrassing, just wait until she sees the one of her with spiky hair, covered from head to toe in bright orange baby food, while throwing a tantrum. Now that's what I call embarrassing!
