Days when Flopsie had home rule

My daughter has been asking about getting another pet recently, and since I'm scared of cats and dogs, I suggested getting a rabbit.

My husband immediately vetoed the idea, after remembering Flopsie, my lop-eared rabbit who shared a home with us in the years before my daughter was born.

When we first got Flopsie, she lived outside like any 'normal' rabbit, but she became ill one day and moved into the house to recuperate.

Unfortunately for my husband, Flopsie decided that she preferred the indoor life and with a little encouragement from myself, she was soon installed in a cosy house in the hall, and was allowed the run of the entire bottom floor of our house.

We were lucky that she wasn't a chewer, so our wires and cables were quite safe in her hands (or mouth), and she didn't like to climb the stairs either, so we didn't need to worry about her venturing up there while we were out.

She became a real part of our family and I honestly believe that she thought of herself as a human being, since she would wait at the kitchen every morning for toast, and would often try her luck at stealing pizza or cake from our plates.

She would lie under the radiator in the winter, and sun herself in the summer.

Her life was one of luxury, and she liked nothing more than snuggling on my knee in the evenings, and then flirting with my bunny slippers before she retired to bed.

Flopsie was also a very bossy bunny, and would growl and stamp her feet if she was being ignored, and would refuse to leave the living room if I was in a hurry to leave the house.

The amount of time I spent chasing her around the room was unbelievable, but I eventually learnt that all I had to do to get her out was to leave the room myself.

She soon got bored of having no attention, and would skip out after me, wondering why I had given up the chase. Eventually dear old Flopsie passed away at the grand age of eight.

We were devastated but just a year later we were blessed with another little girl – this time in the shape of our lovely daughter. She's bossy, loves attention and always gets her own way….. Sounds just like a bunny I once knew . . .
