Closing the door until spring arrives
Let me tell you about my evening. Around 5pm it started to blow a blizzard outside, even though it had looked for a while as though we were finally starting to thaw out.
Shortly after that the electricity went out, which would have been bad enough, but since I was sitting on the toilet at the time that made it 100 times worse.
My husband was not in yet, my daughter was screaming in the living room about monsters turning the lights off and I was desperately trying to get myself together in the dark so I could rescue her.
Meanwhile, as soon as my husband got in from work, I had to leave for an appointment.
As you know, I hate driving in this weather, but off I set, snow battering my windscreen and hoping for the best.
I turned out of my street on to the hill and could not believe the sight that greeted me.
There in front of me were three broken-down cars on the opposite side of the road and two cars that had tried to overtake them, only to get themselves stuck in the process – and on my side of the road.
I couldn't believe it.
I couldn't turn round and I couldn't go forward. I just had to sit there and pray that no-one went into the back of me as I waited for a solution.
To cut a long story short, one of the cars got towed away by a friendly Land Rover driver and I was able to negotiate my way round the rest of them, but I decided it was fruitless to carry on my journey and I should just go home.
Of course I could not go back up the hill to my house as there was still the problem of the remaining broken-down cars, so I then had to drive all over my estate like some kind of intrepid adventurer, looking for a safe way home.
By the time I got home I was in such a state that I had a huge piece of chocolate cake to calm my nerves.
I know I probably shouldn't have had it, but I once read that chocolate is good for you so that's my excuse.
All I can say is thank goodness half-term is now starting.
I am closing the door, drawing the curtains and refusing to leave until spring decides to pay us a visit, or until the schools go back – whichever comes first.
