A Haunting in Wales
It was about 6pm on Friday 27th February when I pulled up outside of the Copper Beach public House in Abercrave South Wales, reputed to be one of the most Haunted pubs in that area.
Myself and Andy another member of the Northamptonshire's Paranormal Investigation Team was just making a courtesy visit to introduce ourselves.
Catherine the Landlady shown us inside, I stood in the bar and straight away I was aware of a beautiful little girl playing kneeling on the floor beside a huge coal fire, (which incidentally was not there), I did not want to say anything about the little girl at the time, as I was aware there was a lot more to come, I checked the premises for anything that may be a hazard on the night, a slippy floor in the cellar, any steps that are hard to see etc., as people would be working in the dark.
I returned to Hafan-y-coed and by now all the 'Ghost Hunter's' had arrived, I introduced and Andy and everyone seemed to get on well together, we all chatted until late and as some of them had a long journey all turned in by 11pm as I had explained, Saturday was going to be a busy day.
Everyone met in the big hall Saturday morning after breakfast at 9-00am and I began explaining all the equipment they would be using on Saturday night. I paired them off and handed out various pieces of equipment, EMF's, Dowsing rods, Compass, Heat sensitive devices, Digital cameras, Night shot video cameras. We also set up various EVP equipment in different locations (Electric Voice Phenomena equipment), and I pointed out all the dark spooky places in Hafan-y-coed that they had to practice their equipment on
Into the morning by about 30 minutes, the Dowsing rods where crossing over, compasses spinning and EMF's screaming away, everyone had a hand held radio (Walkie Talkie), in order to contact me if they needed to
By 4-00pm everyone had plenty of time to practice using the various equipment we had done the Do's and Dont's of a Paranormal Investigation. These are paramount and so important to a successful investigation that go like this.
1- Keep a clear head. This means no alcohol consumption or use of any controlled dangerous substances.
2- No smoking. The possibility of it being photographed and mistaken for ectoplasm is high. In addition, if you're too busy inhaling that acrid tobacco smoke, your nose is dead to any paranormal smells you might encounter.
3- Don't trespass. Always have permission to conduct an investigation.
4- Don't jump to conclusions. You always want to make sure you consider all possible explanations, natural or otherwise.
5- Be open-minded. If you think there are no ghosts, then obviously for you, there won't be. Sceptics bring negative energy that could compromise an investigation.
6- Research. Always make sure you try to find some information on the place you are investigating before you investigate. The history of a place, be it a town or a single home, can shed some light on why a place may be having paranormal activity.
7- Either remove the camera strap or wear it around your neck. It's amazing how many times camera straps have been mistaken for ghostly photos. In keeping with that theme, make sure long hair is pulled back, and all fingers are away from the camera lens. Simple, but important.
8- Make sure all of your equipment is in perfect working condition. Dust and dirt build up can cause problems. It saves you money overall to maintain clean equipment.
9- Bring a flash light with extra batteries. You never know when that flash light, camera, recorder, scanner, (you see where I'm going) is going to run out of juice.
10-Bring along a notebook so you can write down your observations. It is also a good idea to keep a log of your investigations. I recommend keeping track of moon phases, weather and solar weather.
11- Never go alone. Having more than one person insures that nothing will (hopefully) go unnoticed. It is also good to compare notes on an investigation and because you have more to fear from the living, there is safety in numbers.
12- Write down your observations before sharing them. This insures that your story is not subconsciously altered by what someone else tells you.
13- In cold weather, hold your breath while taking a photo. I've seen so many photos of "Ectoplasm" that was nothing more than breath in cold air.
14- Do not take photos while walking or driving along a dirt road or path. This can lead to photos of dust particles and not orbs.
15. Do not take photos in rain, snow, sleet, freezing rain, or fog. It may also be a good idea to keep track of the pollen count in spring and summer and avoid photos when the count is high.
16- Remember you are out there to record paranormal activity and to have fun. But DO NOT be disrespectful in areas such as graveyards or old buildings. No horseplay or loud obnoxious behaviour.
17-Remember, this is not YOUR home.
18- No ouiji boards
19- Talk to the spirits and ask for their permission to take their photo. I also try to explain that I'm not there to be disrespectful but that I am trying to understand them.
20- Do not take photographs with the camera pointing directly at the sun. This can create "Sun Dogs" (hexagon shapes) that are sometimes mistaken for orbs. This will also create "Sun Flares" where the red lines in your picture may occur that are confused for spirit energy.
21- Do not wear any cologne or perfume on any investigation due to you will need your sense of smell to determine if there may be a spirit or entity near by.
22-Don't take photos of reflective surfaces. This would include mirrors, glass windows, and even still pools of water.
We had dinner about 6-00pm and then rechecking, batteries, bulb etc and packing the equipment, we all rested up until 11-00pm. At 11-00pm we all loaded onto the vehicles and set off for Abercrave and the Copper Beach public house.
On arrival, as a Medium I searched for the room with the less Spiritual activity, which was a small snug, this would be used as our base and then we unloaded the equipment and I handed out the various investigation equipment to them, then we all gathered to ask for protection during this vigil and in the pairs myself and Andy took them to various locations,cameras where set up, EVP equipment set up and then, Lights Out.
You could not see a hand in front of you, it was not long before Derek in the main bar area his EMF was crackling like a gigacounter, he called me on the radio and on arrival found it was around a chair that the EMF kept responding, a night shot camera was set up on the area, (later it was found that, that chair had a history of moving around the bar in the hours of darkness).
Next I was called into a huge room up stairs and to what I had been told was the sound of glasses tinkelng, I found the room with three girls in it, one had the Dowsing rods, one the heat sensor and one another EMF, none was activating to the sounds, I sat with Andy and waitted and very soon I heard also a sound of like glasses making a sound like when people give a toast and the sound of glass tinkling, I took a look through my night shot camera and could see nothing.....but then on the ceiling out of the corner of my eye, I noticed a chandelier sparkle slightly and again, the small glass drop lets from the chandelier was turning around slowly, and then shook and I then heard the small droplets of glass bump together making that distinctive tinkling sound, I filmed this amazing Phenomena as I knew no one was up stairs, no doors open and no windows open where a draught or wind could cause this, just then we all heard a sound like a ball being bounced along and someone sighing, one of the girls said "Oh my God" I went to her and made sure she was OK as it was becoming too much for her, Andy took her to the small snug where the lights where on and made sure she had a strong sweet drink of tea, wrapped in a blanket she was fine.
I was then called to another room where EVP equipment had been set up and I watched as three people on the weekend had rewound the audio equipment and had thought they had heard a voice. I listened and although ineligible there was defiantly a man's voice could be heard.
I then called everyone upstairs to where the chandelier Phenomena was and decided that we would have a sance there as the room was so active, so once everyone was gathered, I tried to get my cameras on tripods to video this in darkness, one place I could not set up the tripod and I set up two boxes on top of one another, this was a very sturdy and solid place to set up. After setting up the night vision camera (I am very careful with my equipment as it is all expensive) I placed everyone in the circle.
I began by relaxing everyone, and then asking who ever was there to come close to us and make them selves known, just then the camera which was set up firmly on a box went flying across the room, I knew they did not want the sance to happen, people where becoming scared so lights on and we packed up our equipment and called it a night.
Everybody was in the same room now, we had collected the girl from the snug and as we stood in a circle to say a closing prayer, we all fell silent when suddenly all of us could hear voices mumbling and laughing from the bar downstairs, we could not tell what was being said but it was a hearty crowd having fun, I took my digital infra-red camera and took a photograph of the stairs, as you can see there is a figure on the stairs, at the time no one was on the stairs.
On Sunday morning we sat in the small cinema in Hafan-y-coed set up for viewing evidence on the film, I went straight to where the sance began in the large room with the chandeliers, you could see everyone sitting in a circle with hands held, and as I am talking the picture becomes very slowly distorted from the top down and as if some sort of energy slowly came closer and then 'BANG' It flew through the air with such force and then it switched itself off
