Park Safe Be Safe - Pupils join patrol near school

PCSO Mike Bowes went out with pupils in Wilby

Children joined police community support officers to catch parents on the school run parking illegally.

Youngsters from Wilby Church of England Primary school council were out and about with officers trying to warn parents of the dangers of parking their vehicles inconsiderately.

The village school in Church Lane is on a one-way system on a very narrow residential road and parents often double park or park over dropped kerbs.

PCSO Paul Hurst and PCSO Mike Bowes were patrolling nearby streets with safer schools junior officers trained to spot problem parkers yesterday.

Offenders were given yellow warning cards and asked to move their vehicles. If they are caught again they could be given a fixed penalty notice.

PCSO Hurst said: “The children are very keen to make the roads safer around their school by helping us tackle inconsiderate and illegal parking.

“We are trying to tackle the problem with education first. Should it continue we will ask our PCs to come along to issue fixed penalty notices.”

The Evening Telegraph joined the officers on patrol yesterday and saw several parents double parking despite the police presence.

Headteacher Lisa Pearce said: “The annoying thing is that we have an agreement with The George pub which is only 100 metres away for parents to park there, but they still want to park closer to school.

“We have sent out newsletters asking people to park more considerately but the problem is still there.”

Mum Linda Fransham, whose son Luke, five, was part of the team which was out on patrol yesterday, said: “It is not fair on the children when parents park illegally. We always park in the pub car park.”

The Evening Telegraph’s Park Safe, Be Safe campaign is aimed at tackling illegal parking at schools. If you know of a problem, call our newsdesk on 01536 506153.
