Big celebrations to mark Olympics
Lord Coe holds aloft the torch which will be held by 8,000 runners during its trip across the British Isles to mark the start of London 2012
Buoyed by the news that the Olympic torch will be visiting Northamptonshire, a borough is preparing special plans to celebrate next year’s Games in style.
Kettering Council will speak to schools, sports clubs, and businesses to arrange events, activities, and Olympic-themed celebrations.
The news follows on from last week’s announcement that the torch will be visiting several towns in the north of the county, including Kettering.
The council’s community services manager, Pia Bellamy, said: “Having the torch come to Kettering is a once in a lifetime opportunity.
“Having something of this stature coming to Kettering makes this a very exciting time.
“We want to maximise this opportunity as much as we can and we’re hoping to get schools, clubs, and businesses involved.”
Sports clubs in Kettering welcomed the news to get involved in celebrations.
Kettering Premier Judo Club head coach Richard Hull said: “Everyone here is looking forward to the Olympics, and by next summer there will be a lot of hype and excitement at the club. I’ve been nominated to be a local torchbearer and we’ll get involved in the town events.”
Kettering Cricket and Sports Club secretary Tom Sellars said: “I’m sure we will embrace events here. The Olympics is a great event and the whole club is behind plans to celebrate.”
Kettering’s Manor House Museum and Alfred East Art Gallery will also host special events and exhibitions in the run-up to the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
