Some of the most prolific offenders in the north of the county are be targeted by a new team set up to cut crime.
About 150 of the worst criminals will be tracked down by the team, which will include people working in hotspot areas in Kettering, Wellingborough and East Northamptonshire.

Officers will be out to catch those who continue to break the law, but also looking at the reasons why they re-offend. The team which will be based at Kettering Police Station, will look at issues including drug addiction and homelessness.

Police hope it will help continue the reduction in burglary, robbery and vehicle crime in the north of the county and comes as the force looks at new ways to cut offending in the area.

I my view we should build more prisons and keep the PPO's locked up for their full term.

I also think we could learn something from the "3 strikes and you're out" system used in the States.

Again, we'd need more prisons for that to work.

Good plan, targeted policing is what makes the difference.

I just hope the courts see fit to back them up with proper sentences, and the jails have their "right to refuse prisoners" removed (my aunt is a magistrate who regularly sees sentenced criminals walk out scott free after a prison governer says "I don't want them)

I'd quite like to see the police take a look at the theft committed by certain MPs too...

Didn't the police think of doing this before? Isn't this the reason for their existence? Does that mean the worst criminals have been just left to get on with whatever they do until now?

mrbrown, of course the answer is yes. They've been doing it for a long time. However the police have become less and less popular with many thinking all they do is try and catch motorists committing minor offences. SO every now and again there will be a press release like this to reassure people. Maybe it works?

As for PPOs and the three strikes rule- I agree wholeheartedly. How can prolific offenders exist?! Surely if they're caught a few times, their sentence should be hefty which should prevent them from re-offending!!! I recognise this is the court's problem and not the police's fault.
