A body has been discovered by police hunting for a missing pensioner.
Police investigating the disappearance of 73-year-old Brian Winsworth from Islip have recovered a body from the River Nene.

The body was found between Titchmarsh and Islip on Wednesday evening and removed that night.

A police spokesman said: "The formal identification of the body has not yet taken place."

Mr Winsworth was at his home when he was last heard from on Saturday, May 10.

Police had searched the river and bank at Thrapston and carried out land searches for the missing man.

Thrapston resident and former postman Warren Clarke, of Halford Street, said: "I've known Brian for a long time but don't think I've seen him for about 10 years.

"He was always a kind sort of fellow.

"I know the police haven't identified the body yet, but it would be tragic if it is him.

"There are quite a few people in the village talking about it.

"It brings up bad memories in Thrapston because we had another man go missing last year, who was found in the Nene."

The disappearance of Mr Winsworth was described by family and police as out of character.

On Monday police carried out an extensive search around the river and its banks at Thrapston, near to Mr Winsworth's home.

Peter Sharrock, of Hill Crescent Drive, Thrapston, said: "It's terrible to hear that another man has gone missing.

"I know this has happened in the town before.

"I didn't know the missing man but people have been talking about him in Thrapston."

Last year Thrapston resident Alan Blades was found dead in a lock near Thrapston a week after going missing.
