A centre for vulnerable and homeless people will reopen, but with a reduced offering and with the help of volunteers.
The Evening Telegraph reported last week that trustees of The Daylight Centre in Wellingborough were set to meet to see if there was a way forward for the centre, or if it would have to shut for good.

Staff at the centre were made redundant when i
t closed its doors on December 31.

But the trustees are now planning to reopen the centre on a restricted basis – perhaps two or three times a week – and are appealing for the help of an "army of volunteers" to make this happen.

The centre's former chief executive Patrick Vercoe, who is working with the trustees on a voluntary basis, said: "The thinking is to try and get the centre up and running again as soon as possible.

"But because all the staff have been made redundant we will need the help and assistance of volunteers.

"At present there is one member of staff, a receptionist, and the idea will be to possibly employ one other member of staff and then open the centre with the support of volunteers."

He said until volunteers came forward no firm reopening date could be fixed, but he hoped it would be before the end of March.

He said the centre had received great local support.

Mr Vercoe said: "We have received fantastic support from the churches,
local individuals, the Mothers Union, who have provided much needed financial assistance.

"Wellingborough Council has also been extremely supportive and helpful.

"And of course the offer of £15,000 from Avon shortly before Christmas is extremely welcome."

When it reopens the centre will not offer the full range of services it once did but is likely to offer services such as catering, companionship and activities.
