The 79-year-old woman who died after being hit by a seven-and-a-half-tonne truck yesterday has been named by police.
Savia Maria Giacobbe was hit by the lorry on the Northfield Avenue roundabout with Rothwell Road and Lower Street.

Mrs Giacobbe, who was on foot, died later at Kettering General Hospital.

Police have informed Mrs Giacobbe's family.

It appears Mrs Giacobbe was trying to cross to the middle of the roundabout when she was struck.

The 55-year-old male driver of the lorry, from Burton-upon-Trent, was uninjured.

Collision investigator Keith Millard said Mrs Giacobbe had probably come from the direction of Kettering General Hospital.

She was lying in the middle of the road where Lower Street meets the roundabout, more than 20 metres from the nearest pedestrian crossing.

Police closed one lane of Lower Street for more than an hour as officers carried out an investigation, causing traffic jams along Northfield Avenue, Rothwell Road and Lower Street.

Four police cars and more than a dozen officers blocked traffic as paramedics battled for an hour to treat Mrs Giacobbe at the scene.

A policeman then directed traffic around the side of Prospect House as accident investigators tried to piece together what had happened.

Anyone who has information about the incident is asked to call the police on 03000 111 222.

I recognise your freedom to comment Michael Vick, but your comment is not very appropriate right at this minute and I hope this womans relatives don't happen to read it.

This poor lady obviously felt safer on a gritted road than on the footpaths which are treacherous especially past the hospital which I would have thought the council would have cleared better, as it is a major access for patients and hospital workers. Commiserations to her family as this was a horrible accident.

I actually know the lady in question and before i knew who it was that was involved in the accident i walked down the hill towards the roundabout and almost slipped over in the treacherous conditions. When i found out later in the day who was killed my first reaction was , why didn't she use the crossing, but then remembered how bad the paths actually were. I am considerably younger and was shaken myself walking towards the crossing, so please think before making comments that you have, and may i say her ralatives are devastated.

My condolences to the family and friends of the lady involved in this tragic accident. I believe that all the comments made above are fair, and have probably been made without malice.
However, I would also ask for some sympathy to be spared for possibly the most innocent victim of this accident - the driver. Now is not the correct time for a debate on pedestrian responsibility, but it is an issue which does need addressing.

This is another reason why the council or even goverment should be thinking about gritting the paths around major road junctions or major building especiall the hospital. I noticed when I drove through Kettering the other day the council were gritting the market place and near the taxi rank places where people don't use that much. But the path near the hospital next to busy roads and on a hill don't get looked at! If a counciler live there no doubt it would be done!!

Condolances go out to the family

That is a joke that my comments have been removed.
Would anyone like to inform me why?
What happened to free speech?
