A FOOTBALLER who is profoundly deaf has been invited to train with the England Women's Deaf Football squad.
Claire Stancliffe, 18, of Wellingborough, has a profound hearing loss in the speech frequency range and relies on lip reading, but this has not stopped her doing what she loves.

Claire went to Christopher Hatton School in Wellingborough before starting a National Diploma in Sports Development and Fitness at Moulton College in September 2006.

Following her recent performances for Vicarage Farm Ladies FC, she has had a call- up for the England Women's Deaf Football squad, and is joining them for a training weekend at Lilleshall, where the England team train, today.

She said: "Being deaf does not really affect me while playing football.

"My team-mates at Vicarage Farm just need to be aware I probably won't hear them if they shout for the ball, and I can't hear the referee's whistle the majority of the time.

"I always wanted to go further with my football but didn't think it was possible, I just enjoy playing football and developing my skills.

"I have chosen to aim for the Deaf Olympics 2009 because it's a massive event and it would be great to participate for my country.

"I am also aiming for the Deaf World Cup in Greece in July."

Arlo Wood, course manager at Moulton College, said: "It is a fantastic achievement for Claire, although she is very modest.

"After she has been to the weekend, she should learn pretty quickly whether she has been selected to join the squad.

"She is a very hardworking student and we are all hoping she makes it onto the squad."
