Forecasters are predicting more bitterly cold weather hours after temperatures fell to -6c last night.

High pressure is still dominant across the UK and weather systems in north Scotland are expected to head south today bringing more wintry showers.

A spokesman for Pitsford Hall Weather Station said: "The county has experienced a widespread and
penetrating frost overnight with temperatures in some areas having fallen to around –6oc or lower.

"Ice will be a serious hazard on minor untreated roads and pavements and is likely to remain so throughout the day as temperatures will struggle to get above freezing. "Despite the cold it will be a fine winter's day with plenty of sunshine and only a light air from the north.

"The penalty for the sunshine will be another severe frost overnight and there is every likelihood that temperatures could fall to around -6C.

"There will be further light flurries of snow just before dawn, but amounts will be slight and any snowfall shortlived."

Forcasters have said that tomorrow will be bitterly cold although temperatures should rise above freezing.

A spokesman said: "There will be a slight thaw of any lying snow which will then refreeze overnight maintaining the risk of icy stretches on untreated surfaces.

"Winds will continue very light or calm with overnight lows falling to -3C.

"There will be little improvement on Thursday but the day should be dry with some reasonable sunny spells."
