A team of teenage cyclists has completed a bike ride across France in memory of a fellow pupil who died of meningitis.
A group of four Oundle School lower sixth formers, led by Nick Kernick, 17, travelled across France this summer to raise money for the Meningitis Research Foundation in memory of Thommy Purbrook.

The team included Jun Yamazaki, Matthieu Oliver and William Elvin, who are all also 17.

They cycled from La Rochelle on the Atlantic coast to Marseille on the Mediterranean coast, covering 875km in nine days during August.

Their route passed over some of the most mountainous regions of France, taking in part of the Tour de France route and through areas of idyllic French countryside.

Nick said: "The expedition was challenging, quite difficult at times, but also very interesting and good fun.

"We crossed what, at this time of year, are the most beautiful regions of France but also some of the hilliest ones too.

"We have seen some gorgeous countryside, towns, abbeys and seaside and have experienced French hospitality and wonderful French food.

"Among our hardest days involved cycling 80km, without more than a few flat metres, crossing valley after valley, which included at the hottest part of the day a 9km nine per cent climb with temperatures above 39C."

The charity was chosen in memory of Thommy, a former pupil from Oundle School.

The 18-year-old pupil at Oundle School died from a meningococcal disease while on a school trip to St Petersburg in December last year.

The cyclists first came up with the idea of the trip in November last year, but later decided to also raise money in Thommy's memory.

Nick added: "We have learned a lot about planning, organisation and team-work abroad and wish to thank everyone who has helped us on this trip."

The group is hoping to raise £2,000 and is less than £200 from its goal.
