A loans adviser stole £205,000 to fund his domineering wife's shopaholic spending sprees.
Anthony Walsh, 44, worked for HSBC bank at its Woodhill branch in Northampton when he took out fraudulent loans in the names of family members.
Northampton Crown Court heard he set up seven false loan accounts over three years, worth £205,927.
Judge Ian Alexander QC spared Walsh a prison sentence, saying he was basically an honest man.
He added: "You are undoubtedly a very timid man who suffers a lack of character and that enabled your former wife to place you in a rather invidious position. I do not believe you would have embarked on this course of action if your wife had not embarked on her spending activity."
Walsh, of Falconer Rise, East Hunsbury, who admitted theft, was sentenced to a three-year community order with 300 hours community service.
