Road deaths have been branded a "public health epidemic" by Northamptonshire's road safety bosses.
For a number of years, they have been calling for legislation to support road safety efforts, and yesterday the Government revealed its 10-year strategy.

Measures include 20mph speed limits around schools and residential areas and a lower drink-dr
ive limit.

Ministers are also considering six penalty points for serious breaches of the speed limit, along with more severe penalties for motorists caught not wearing a seatbelt.

John Spencer, head of Northamptonshire's County Reduction Partnership, said he supported the Government's proposals.

He said: "It's not rocket science. The lower the speed you are travelling when there's impact, the less severe injuries will be.

"The 20mph zones need to be properly signed and enforced and it needs to be obvious that they're there for a particular reason.

"I would like to think that most drivers would take heed so these plans are very welcome."

The road safety charity Brake launched a petition to call on the Government to introduce 20mph safety zones around schools and the routes to children's homes.

A spokesman for the charity said: "We need safety zones around children's schools and homes to have 20mph limits, high-visibility warning signs and, where necessary, other measures to get drivers to slow down.
