A man who cycled nearly 400 miles for charity when only 12 months earlier he had been unable to walk unaided has been nominated for a Pride in Northamptonshire award.
Hedley Williams, 35, of Raunds, appeared in the Evening Telegraph earlier this year when he raised more than £2,300 for Park Infants School in Raunds and the Diabetes Centre at Northampton General Hospital by cycling across Great Britain in only seven days.

He has been nominated in the Fundraiser of the Year category of the awards by his wife Liz.

She said: "Hedley undertook the challenge during Diabetes Week because he has type one diabetes and wanted to raise awareness about the condition and money.

"He raised more than £2,300 for the Diabetes Centre and for play equipment at Park Infants School where our son goes to school.

"The whole of our family is exceptionally proud of Hedley and all his determination over the last few years."

Mr Williams' difficulties with his leg began when he was involved in a car accident when he was a teenager.

As a result in 2005 he underwent a leg lengthening and straightening procedure but due to complications his recovery took much longer than expected and he was left dependent on crutches for two years. To help him recuperate he took up long distance cycling a year ago to strengthen his leg.

He decided to take part in a sponsored bike ride earlier this summer to prove his leg was better as well as to raise money for the school and centre.

Mr Williams said: "It feels a bit strange to have been nominated for an award. I just hope my nomination might help to raise further awareness about diabetes and the need for fundraising."

The Pride in Northamptonshire awards will be given out at a presentation ceremony on September 26 at Wicksteed Park, Kettering, hosted by TV's Big Brother series 2 winner Brian Dowling.
