A total of £5,000 has been raised for James Donnachie's fund so that he can be taken to Hungary for treatment at the world-famous Peto Institute.

Community groups and individuals in Corby have rallied round to help achieve the £10,000 target by August next year and have ensured that the 12-month effort is on target.

Mum Charlene Currie said: "Corby people are the best people when it comes to fundraising. We have had a great response from them because they have a great heart.

"We've just been overwhelmed by people wanting to help."

In the latest effort, members of the town's Glasgow Celtic Supporters' Club, based at St Brendan's Social Club in Beanfield Avenue, held a race night to help James.

They raised about £400 and bumped the total up to about £600 for the campaign.

Miss Currie has also had people knocking on her door to hand over cheques following a number of fundraising events.

Sandy Yule, at VIP Party People in Rockingham Road, Corby, is co-ordinating the campaign and has had lots of people dropping into the shop to donate their coins. Collection buckets have also been put in place at Corby's new indoor market for shoppers to back the fundraising effort.

James has now started at Beanfield Primary School in the reception class.

Miss Currie said: "He's enjoying it and doing really well. James is coming on in leaps and bounds."

James, who is confined to a wheelchair, has five different conditions including a rare form of diabetes and a brain abnormality.

Doctors have described his progress as good but have recommended the Peto Institute as the place where he can get the treatment he needs to help him walk.
