Cuts in services of more than £1.6m will mean playschemes are scrapped and car parking charges introduced as Corby Council tries to make savings over the next two years.
A series of measures to cut public services, make salary savings and remove staff training budgets were approved at the One Corby Policy Committee meeting this week.

The measures include introducing parking charges at the Corby East Midlands International Swimming Pool and East Carlton Park in a bid to save a total of £105,000 in running costs over the next two years. Hanging baskets and bedding plants on traffic islands will also be removed and residents wanting replacement wheelie bins will be charged.

Deputy leader of Corby Council Mark Pengelly said: "We're trying not to cut anything that will hit anyone severely.

"As a political group, we've asked the officers if they can work around a three per cent increase in council tax.

"We know people have been made redundant and have had their wages cut and we don't think it's fair to increase it anything above three per cent.

"The playschemes will be one of the first things to come back in."

The list of 34 non-salary reductions is now set to go out to public consultation and will have to be discussed by the full council before being approved.

Cllr Pengelly and council leader Pat Fawcett are to meet senior officers of the authority today to see if there is anything that can be saved that will minimise the impact on the public.

Members of both opposition parties on the committee voted against the proposed cuts.

Leader of the Conservative opposition group, Cllr David Sims, said: "The people of Corby expect value for money. I don't think they will get that with these proposals."

The Liberal Democrats also opposed the proposals.

we are in a situation where private and public companies are cutting back severely on everything.

Hardly surprising that the council is also effected.
When land sales and non-council tax income starts to increase things will correct themselves.

Till then, seems we will all have to tighten our collective belts a little - MP's and expenses take note!

The East Carlton car park charges were rejected last time round. Let's hope the same happens this time.

"The playschemes will be one of the first things to come back in" says the Deputy leader of Corby Council, as if he thinks that that will make a difference to this generation of youngsters. I'm not impressed by these cuts to services, and can't believe that these services once lost will ever return, shame on you Cllr Pengelly for trying to excuse your policies on the promise of you may get what you are paying for back soon. Again tax payers suffer because of bad council management.

Last week Corby council announced they were going to invest £750,000 in repairing the pavillion at Rockingham Triangle, there is half the money they need to save straight away. Also a council considering putting up the council tax at double the rate of inflation, and six times the current interest rate is signs of a Council in deep trouble.

Frontline services are always the first to go - the line of least resistance...

Can i suggest the council delete the allowance for corporate alchoholic drinks in the mayors parlour (as suggested by the Lib Dems last year) and use the money saved to contribute to play schemes.
