A new Burger King is to open in Corby town centre, creating 30 new jobs.
Burger King has submitted a planning application to open a restaurant in a huge empty unit in Willow Place.

It means there are only two remaining vacant units in the shopping centre, the highest occupancy rate since it opened two-and-a-half years
ago.

The jobs will include 15 full-time and 15 part-time positions.
The restaurant will spread over two floors and will include an outdoor seating area. It will be in the vacant unit opposite Cafe Con Leche in Queen's Square.

Town centre manager Daniel Pickard said: "They will be opening up as soon as they are through the planning process. It's great news again for Corby town centre. We're doing really well, despite the recession.
"We are also hoping to have some positive news about the remaining empty units next to Primark soon."

Since the recession began, Corby has seen a glut of new store openings while other town centres have floundered.

It has a new Ethel Austin, Au Naturale, Crazy Udder, Cafe Con Leche bistro, two new hairdressers', a Select clothing store, two mobile phone shops and a key cutting and shoe repair store.

Laurence McGill, 28, from Steyning Close, Corby, said: "I think it's a great place for Burger King because of all the open space around it for seats.

"It will be really nice to sit outside in the summer."

Several of these 'new' stores are just relocations about the town centre; Ethel Austin/Au naturale (now in receivership), Select and the key cutting & shoe repair shop.

Is it just me or is the craft of 'whinging' about every new store and facility in Corby becoming really irritating?

Whinging about the new swimming pool
Whinging about the 'Cube' theatre
whinging about new football ground
whinging about snow in winter

Hard to blieve we are the same country that saw off the far right Nazi's of Germany with courage and forebearance.

Now, we just seem to be a nation who winge about anything and everything.

One of the worst phrases ever is:

"well, I pay my (council) tax so the government (council) should ....... (fill in any whinge subject)

Whinging about the ET hyping something up. Corby Town Centre is the whole site, not just Willow Place.

Ray, your spot on Buddy! This is another win for Corby, great news, more choice for shoppers and more money and more jobs being generated in the local community. It's all win, win, win. Bring it on! Beats that manky burger stall in Kettering!

Corby Town Centre is indeed the whole of the area and not just Willow Place. However, it is the impact of Willow Place that is encouraging new shoppers into the area such that the whole Town Centre benefits. Filling the units in Willow Place will add to the feeling of "completeness" and should, in the medium to longer term, encourage other retailers / businesses to set up shop in the older part of the town. Ethel Austin and Au Naturale have indeed moved but, in Au Naturale's situation, they have moved into the centre of town from the edge of town.

Too many people are quick to criticise the efforts of all of the North Northants towns who are all trying to develop themselves to encourage more people to come and shop or live in the area.

As for Burger King ... my kids say that they are more preferable to other fast food outlets and it is, again, another global brand coming to Corby - something has encouraged them to do that and it won't have been the part of the Town Centre that's been there for the last 20/30 years. It'll have been Willow Place.

When all the units are full and footfall in the entire town centre increases then Land Securities would have evidence that phase 2 is viable and should begin ASAP.

Then we may get a cinema, new multi storey car park and most important A NEW SUPERMARKET (Tesco / Sainsbury) preferable attached to the new Car Park, ect.

Each new retailer who takes a unit makes a compelling case for phase 2 sooner rather than later

Burger King is far better than McDonalds. It will be great that you can also sit outside. As for the other part of the town centre, Land Securities are in the process of regeneration with corporation street and I am sure once they have improved its image many more stores will want to set up shop. I do think we need more types of shops in Corby however we are doing really well and I just hope we can move onto the second stage as soon as the economic climent improves. BRING IT ON CORBY..WE DESERVE IT !

The older part of town (Corporation Street particularly) doesn't need too much work to make it desirable again. Get rid of those horrible canopies, put in new ones like the one above HSBC, get rid of the kiosks in the middle and have similar shopfronts to Willow Place - they have no shutters on the outside and look much better for it. The taxi rank will go anyway when they do the improvements to George Street so it'll be much nicer then.

I believe Land Securities have to wait until the new financial year to carry out more work. Budgets! Then I am sure all the above will be done in corporation street. I think they just have to wait until the flower stall moves elsewhere before removing the Kiosks which will give a good view of the swimming pool and cube from the town centre.
