Plans to unite and empower a community to improve an area of Kettering will be launched with a meeting tomorrow.
In the first of its kind in the area, a forum is being set up in the William Knibb ward so that people living and working in the area can have a say on how to take their community forward.

The William Knibb Community Forum is made up of representa
tives from St Mary's Primary School, Kettering Council, the police, councillors, Kettering Volunteer Network and Groundwork, a trust which works with communities facing rapid growth.

The group wants residents to attend the a meeting at the school in Fuller Street tomorrow from 7pm to help outline aims and vision.

Deputy headteacher at the school, Diane Dekker, urged people to get involved, saying they were a group which wanted to make things happen.

She said: "This forum is the first of its kind for the ward and we want people to have a say on things we're doing.

"We want to raise life chances in the area and this is purely a community forum.

"As a school we are aware of the vital part we play in the community, but we don't exist in isolation.

"At the meeting we will look at the kind of things that this group of people can practically and realistically achieve.

"We want to unite and empower people.

"We've got a situation in the UK where communities have ceased to exist but we want to show that working together can be powerful and have an impact on many people."

Mrs Dekker said the area was taking part in the council-backed Kleen Sweep campaign in the coming weeks to improve the appearance of the area.

The school will also be open on May 28 and May 29 from 10am to 1pm for anyone who wants to have a go at creating artwork which will later be installed on boards in the nearby park.

The William Knibb ward's boundaries include Northfield Avenue, Lower Street and Montagu Street, St Mary's Road and Northampton Road. To get involved call Diane Dekker on 01536 485500.
