A mother had to endure verbal abuse from a gang of teenage girls while trying to breastfeed her 14-week-old baby daughter.
Staff at McDonald's in Wellingborough came to Melissa Donovan's aid after she was subjected to the abuse while in the fast food restaurant.

The mother-of-three, of Ashton Grove, Wellingborough, said there are not enough places in the town centre for breast-feeding mothers, and she worried that the attitude of people like the teenage girls in McDonald's might put many young mothers off breastfeeding completely.

She said: "I was subjected to some vile abuse from a group of teenage girls when I fed my baby, which made me feel quite uncomfortable and angry.

"The girls suggested I feed her in the toilet, but how many adults would like to eat their lunch in a toilet?

"The staff at McDonald's were very supportive and helped me out, but the incident left me feeling shocked.

"I am a firm believer that breast is best, and, having breast fed my two sons until they were 10 months old, I intend to do the same with my baby daughter, Yvainne.

"I am not that shy and if Yvainne needs feeding I'll feed her, no matter where we are, but there is nowhere comfortable and private in Wellingborough where a shy new mum could feed their baby."

Mrs Donovan said she was concerned the reason that only 20 per cent of new mums consider breastfeeding their baby is because they are scared of the public reaction when they are out and about.

Nicola Hollis, general manager at McDonald's in Wellingborough, said: "I was happy to support Mrs Donovan during this incident.

"The girls were only about 16 years old and their suggestion that the baby could be fed in the toilet was wrong and showed a lack of education.

"I told them that if they had an issue with the baby being breast fed in the restaurant they should take their food and go outside.

"We have no problem with mothers breast feeding in store, but I do agree that there should be more places to breast feed in the town centre."

The Evening Telegraph approached Wellingborough Council to ask whether it would consider creating a breast feeding area in the town centre but no-one was available for comment.

Should our town centres have places where mums can breast feed in comfort? Have you had a bad experience of breast feeding in a public place? Let us know your views by signing in and posting your comments below.

Teenage girls and miss high and mighty...why would you sit there staring anyway? Look the other way if you're so offended by human nature, or grow up...

not trying to change your opinion so calm down, I just wanted to know the reasoning behind your harsh words...let's hope you don't actually have children yourself if you can lose your temper that quickly.

'girl fight'!!!!!
(see above)

worked on an election campaign in 97 where the wife of the agent had her baby in the office on election day.

she fed the baby and carried on working the phone lines!!

surely the answer is discretion.
No one in the office saw anything (we were too busy anyway).

I would hope this woman did not simply 'get them out' but would have been as discret as possible while making sure the baby was fed and cared for.

what's all the fuss about?

I just hope that young lady learns some tolerance - breast feeding is natural and most mums do it with absolute discretion! Wonder how she will feel when she has her own baby and wants to breast feed when her baby is crying to be fed when she is out in public???? Methinks her opinion will change big time and she will no longer be a miss high and mighty....!!

Miss High & Mighty ought to get herself some lactation education before commenting on such articles. She like the teenage girls in the article are an embarrassment to themselves in revealing their lack of intelligence so blatantly with such ignorant comments. Its time for lactation education in schools as obviously the main barrier to breastfeeding is society wide ignorance. Human milk isn't best its simply the biological norm for human kids and artificial formula is nutritionally & developmentally substandard. Get over yourself Miss High & Mighty, breasts are designed for feeding infants not selling sex, booze & fast cars and FYI most mothers feed so discreetly you don't even know they're doing it!

No-one has to see 'floppy boobs' while someone is breastfeeding - it isn't necessary to get them out at all.
You are a troll.

OMG there really are some wierd people out there......I have 6 children and it was my personal choice not to breastfeed them, but if i had i would have fed them where and when they needed it,and if it would put someone off their food then i guess they should look the other way.....i certainly would NEVER have considered feeding in the toilets and been made to feel that i was doing something wrong, it is the natural way to feed your baby isnt it??????? Strange how far less people seem concerned with a pregnant woman smoking (and harming her child) than with doing what nature intended and breastfeeding them!!!!! BUNCH OF WEIRDOS.
