A major police hunt was launched when a seven-year-old boy wandered away from his Northamptonshire home.

A spokesman for Northamptonshire Police said "every available officer" and the police helicopter unit were ordered to scour the area for the boy.

He disappeared for several hours on Friday evening.

He had been seen by his mother at about 6.30pm at his home in Kingsthorpe, when he asked to go and visit nearby shops.

Shortly afterwards, she discovered he had gone missing and alerted police.

However, the boy later returned home at about 9.30pm.
