A party atmosphere prevailed in Titchmarsh yesterday, with hundreds turning out to see the housewives' favourite cut the ribbon at Titchmarsh Village Shop.

The village's previous shop closed more than a decade ago, and residents have had no local store since.

But the smart new shop, housed in the historic Old Fire Engine House, will be open seven days a week.

Speaking to the crowds gathered outside the store, Mr Titchmarsh talked about the community spirit evident in the village, and said how proud he was to open the new shop.

He said: "Titchmarsh is such a beautiful village."

Mr Titchmarsh browsed the goods on offer instore before giving autographs and signing copies of his books for fans.

Catherine and Graham Guy, who have lived in Titchmarsh for 12 years, went to see the opening.

Chairman of the shop's management committee Jane Teague said: "It's a very proud day.
"A shop creates a hub in the village.
"It's a place where people can go and meet and stop to chat, particularly elderly people, who can become isolated as they get older."

The shop will be open from 8am to 6.30pm Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 3pm on Saturdays, and 8.30am to 12.30pm on Sundays.
