Major plans which will transform Wellingborough town centre over the next 11 years look set to be approved.
Wellingborough Action Plan sets out to improve and redevelop key areas of the town and provide better facilities for residents, including 15,500 sq m of new shops, new community and leisure facilities and more housing.

It is designed to attract ne
w housing and jobs as well as conserving and enhancing Wellingborough's historical and cultural assets.

The plans will be discussed by Wellingborough Council's Development Committee on Wednesday.

Cllr Lora Lawman, chairman of the development committee, said: "I am very pleased that our joint vision for the town centre has now been approved by the Government.

"This will help us to take forward our ambitions and proposals for Wellingborough. We hope the plan will encourage investors to commit private sector funds alongside what the council is already doing in order to bring the necessary changes for all.

"With these plans we hope to protect and enhance the town's heritage, building on our existing solid foundations and helping to restore pride in the borough while regenerating the town centre.

"We would like to thank all those who have taken the time to comment on the proposals over the last couple of years. It has certainly helped us to bring forward the exciting regeneration scheme we now have in place.

"It is easy to see why Wellingborough town centre has a very bright future, even when faced with the realities of the economic downturn."

The improvement of the facilities and amenities in Wellingborough will begin when the Town Centre Area Action Plan is officially adopted on Wednesday.

Residents were pleased to hear the town could be one step closer to a new look.

Marion Lamb, 56, who lives in the town, said: "It definitely does need it. We seem to have nothing but charity shops and hairdressers in the town so it would be great if we could get some new shops and facilities."
